ArtStart at the Hood Museum!

On our last of four visits to the Hood Museum we looked at oversized porcelain vessels made by Sin-Ying Ho, a New York artist who was born and raised in Hong Kong.

Back at the studio we made paper collages of our favorite vessels.

We are so fortunate to be able to participate each year in these ArtStart lessons.
It is fun to see how excited the children are to view a new exhibit in the gallery and to watch their appreciation for art blossom.

A Busy Month of May!

Toby told us all about his new baby chicks.

In math, we are exploring the attributes of two and three dimensional shapes.

First grade showed us their Japanese projects.
We used brushes and ink on rice paper.

Cherry Blossoms
Our culminating  Forces and Motion project is to design and build a marble roll-way. We are using the information we learned when we experimented with ramp heights.
The roll-way challenge is to make the marble change direction three times, speed up and slow down two times and add a special feature.

Our Tulips Are Blooming - Inside and Out!

In art class Mrs. Bando showed us Georgia O'Keefe's painting of flowers.  She taught us about radial symmetry in drawing "birds eye view" portraits of tulips.  Students used oil pastels and had the help of a partner to complete their over sized portraits.

On Friday we were excited to see one tulip in our garden had fully bloomed and predicted the others will soon.  We have been making observations, measurement and drawings since after Spring vacation.

Our tulip project is in partnership with the Journey North organization.  With our growing  tulips we can track the coming of Spring over the Northern Hemisphere.  You can see our shared observations by following the Journey North link on this blog.  Click on Tulips and the map.  Use the info button to find us.
